Stardew Valley: Where to Catch Catfish

The Catfish, although not the most challenging fish for aspiring anglers in Stardew Valley, can prove to be elusive when trying to locate it in the rivers of Pelican Town.

Since its release in 2016, Stardew Valley has captivated players with its engaging gameplay and fascinating world. The town of Pelican Town offers a plethora of activities for players to enjoy, which have expanded over the years. Fishing is a significant feature in Stardew Valley, allowing players to improve their skills and capture a wide range of aquatic creatures.

While there are numerous common fish to be found in the game’s ponds and rivers, there are also several rare ones that can only be caught under specific conditions. The Catfish, although not the most challenging fish to catch, may pose a bit of a challenge for new players trying to determine its appearance patterns.

The world of Stardew Valley is intricately tied to its seasons, and players often engage in different activities depending on whether it’s Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter. As a result, specific fish can only be found during certain seasons. The Catfish, for instance, is available in Pelican Town’s River, Riverlands Farm, or Hill-top Farm during Spring and Fall. In Summer, it can be found in the Secret Woods and Witch’s Swamp.

However, fishing in Stardew Valley is not solely dependent on seasons but also on the weather. Players can only encounter the Catfish in the aforementioned locations on rainy days, highlighting the importance of monitoring the forecast. While it is technically possible to catch the Catfish in Winter, it requires using a Rain Totem to change the weather conditions.

Once players have located a Catfish in Stardew Valley, the next challenge is to successfully catch it. Each fish in the game has a hidden difficulty rating that determines its movement speed and how challenging it is to keep it within the optimal range during the fishing minigame. The Catfish has an above-average difficulty rating but follows the basic movement pattern, without any darting, floating, or sinking behaviors seen in trickier fish.

To increase their chances of catching a Catfish, players should focus on leveling up their fishing skill by practicing on easier catches first. Additionally, using the right Bait and Tackle can greatly facilitate fishing. While only the top-tier Iridium Rod can utilize Tackle, items like the Trap Bobber, Cork Bobber, and Barbed Hook can make reeling in the Catfish a more straightforward task.

What Are Catfish Used For In Stardew Valley?

While players in Stardew Valley may need to catch numerous fish to fulfill quest requirements, Catfish holds significant value with multiple uses. It is a vital component of the River Fish Bundle found in the Fish Tank. Contributing a Catfish, alongside a Sunfish, Shad, and Tiger Trout, will grant players 30 Bait as a reward. Additionally, Catfish is incorporated into three distinct recipes, allowing players to create the following consumables:

Maki Roll

While the Maki Roll recipe is not exclusive to Catfish, it can certainly be created using Catfish as one of the required resources. To craft a Maki Roll, players need 1 x any fish, 1 x Seaweed, and 1 x Rice. This consumable item restores 45 Health and 100 Energy when consumed. The recipe for the Maki Roll can be acquired by watching the Queen of Sauce television show on the 21st of Summer in the first year. Alternatively, players can purchase the recipe from the Stardrop Saloon for 300g.

Sashimi is a simple yet effective recipe in Stardew Valley, providing players with a quick restoration of Health and Energy. It only requires 1 x any fish to craft and replenishes 33 Health and 75 Energy upon consumption. To unlock the Sashimi recipe, players must establish a relationship with Linus and reach a friendship level of 3+ hearts with him. Linus will send the recipe through the mail.

In addition, Catfish (or any fish) can be utilized in the production of Quality Fertilizer. This valuable item enhances the chances of growing superior crops and improves soil quality. To create Quality Fertilizer, players will need to combine 1 x any Fish and 2 x Sap. Learning the recipe requires players to reach Level 9 in the Farming skill.

For players seeking stylish attire, crafting a Fish Shirt can be a fashionable choice. By inserting a Catfish into the spool of the Sewing Machine, players can create this shirt adorned with a charming pixelated fish design. The Fish Shirt is also dyeable, allowing players to customize its color to their liking.

Catfish can also be used to produce Roe, a valuable resource. Roe can be further processed to create Aged Roe and Caviar, an Artisan Good that can be sold for a significant profit.

While many NPCs in the game are either neutral or have a dislike for Catfish, there is one NPC who loves it. Gifting Willy a Catfish can help improve the player’s relationship with him. Additionally, players can sell Catfish for a good amount of money, especially if they have the Angler perk. Catfish without any special quality will sell for 300g each with the Angler perk, while those of Iridium Star Quality can be sold for 600g. Catching Catfish grants players between 28 to 40 Fishing EXP, depending on the quality of the fish.

Stardew Valley Catfish Prerequisites

It’s important to note that in Stardew Valley, the Catfish can only be caught while it’s raining. Players have two options to encounter the Catfish: wait for the rain to occur naturally or use a rain totem, which allows them to fish for the Catfish in any season.

If players prefer not to use a rain totem, they’ll have to patiently wait for the rain to arrive. This will enable them to fish for the Catfish in either the Spring or Fall seasons.

Once the weather conditions are in order, players will be relieved to know that they don’t have to wake up early to catch the Catfish. It can be caught between 6 am and 12 am, giving players a reasonable timeframe to attempt their fishing endeavors.
